The Polish Losers' Club
My exhibition in Berlin in 2023 at the Polish Losers' Club has turned a kind of circle of time in my artistic biography, because I did one of my first exhibitions after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in West Berlin at the Zindikat Gallery in 1985, so 38 years ago. Berlin was then still divided into Berlin Ost and Berlin West.
Throughout all this time, I have been courted by many different galleries to this day for my re-exhibition in Berlin, but I have tended not to apply for it too much and have not received any proposals from Berlin. Although I have done many exhibitions in other cities in Germany over the years. In the summer of 2023, during a trip with our grandchildren to Berlin, I decided to see the “Polish Losers” Club', which Ewa Trafna, who had previously had an exhibition there, had told me about, and in the meantime I had also learned from various friends living in Berlin that this Club was a generally well-known and respected institution in that city. My first impression upon entering this club was that it was completely cluttered and some kind of Persian fair was taking place there. However, my conversation with the head of the club, Piotr Mordel, was very pleasant and, after seeing my catalogue, he offered to do my exhibition and I soon received an email from him offering me a date in early November. I was very happy about this, although I was a little worried about how my paintings would fit into the chaos of things I had seen on my first trip there.
Shortly before the opening, when I had already planned my trip and booked a hotel, I suddenly received an email saying that the opening of my exhibition had to be postponed by one day because a literary evening with a writer from Szczecin, Iga Iwasiów, had to take place on the day on which the opening was originally scheduled. At first, I was very upset because I had already sent out many invitations to the vernissage and had to send out invitations again with a new date. All in all, however, I was pleased that by arriving earlier in Berlin I would have more time to prepare my exhibition. With the efficient help of Piotr (Mordel), who surprised me by finding the club completely cleaned and tidy. It was also the first time in my life that I saw that someone, like him, was able to hang my paintings on two nails without any spirit level at once so perfectly horizontal that it did not require the slightest correction. In this way, my whole exhibition hung very quickly and was ready by the evening that the literary evening was to take place there. In this way, I had two vernissages there, because during this meeting with Inga Iwasiów and her many friends I had many interesting conversations about my paintings and art. And the following evening my friends and acquaintances from Berlin came to the vernissage, as well as many guests of the club. And for this postponement of the opening, my exhibition was extended by a week.
In addition to the photos which I post on my FB profile and on YouTube I have posted a video of this exhibition, On my website just click on the little FB and YouTube stamps at the bottom of the page
